The Materials: Soorty aims to become net-zero by 2050

Soorty Enterprises, a global expert in denim production, has announced it aims to achieve its near-term and net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets according to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation by 2050, in line with global climate goals.

The group's targets align with the lowering of 1.5°C impact and represent the highest level of commitment within the SBTi framework.

Soorty Enterprises has committed to achieving net-zero GHG emissions across its value chain by 2050.

The company has set the goal to reduce absolute Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions by 54.60% by 2033 from a 2021 base year. It has also committed to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, business travel, and employee commuting by 54.60% within the same timeframe.

Along with that, it also aims to reduce absolute Scope 1, 2 & 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2021 base year.

“These commitments reflect our unwavering dedication to a sustainable future,” said Asad Soorty, director, Soorty Enterprises.

“We believe that by setting these ambitious targets, we are not only contributing to global climate goals but also driving innovation and efficiency within our operations and supply chain. Our journey towards net-zero is a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic growth,” he added.

“Achieving these targets is not something a business can do in isolation, although we must collaborate with government bodies, the international community, NGOs, universities, scientists, and the entire supply chain,” said Mobeen Chughtai, head of Corporate Communications & CSR of the group.

“We are setting these ambitious targets for ourselves and are eager to partner with all stakeholders to make them a reality. It is only together that we can drive meaningful change and create a sustainable future for all,” he added.

The SBTi validation confirms that Soorty's proactive approach to mitigating climate impact aligns with global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The company's comprehensive plan includes significant reductions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which are direct and energy-related emissions from its operations.

Additionally, Soorty is addressing Scope 3 emissions, which encompasses indirect emissions from its value chain, including purchased goods and services, transportation, and business travel.

Soorty's approach is focused to involve the entire supply chain–from responsible material sourcing to energy-efficient manufacturing.

The company has already started adopting technologies and practices meant to minimize waste, reduce water usage, enhance energy efficiency, and use renewable energy. Along with that, it has been continuously updating its technology to reduce dependency on natural resources and minimize waste.

Soorty also actively collaborates with its supply chain partners and stakeholders, working towards shared goals, which drives innovation while promoting sustainable production. Among its actions, it also promotes circular economy practices and improves the lives of workers and communities.
